Atlantic Coastal drive from Jacksonville to New York

Thinking about taking the two weeks of Christmas and New Years to travel north from Jacksonville to New York along the Atlantic Coast. Any recommendations for a good trip? Is there a good reference or guide book that I could purchase?

Things to see and do? Well I'm retired Navy so there's the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Charleston SC, USS North Carolina at Battleship Memorial Park in Wilmington NC, USS Wisconsin at Nauticus in Norfolk VA, USS New Jersey at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden NJ and USS Intrepid at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in NYC.

Our son is in the Navy, stationed in Newport News so we've seen a lot of those; I would also recommend a stop at Ft Bragg and Fayetteville, NC and spend some time there. Ft Bragg has the US Army Airborne Museum, and Fayetteville has the US Special Forces Museum - being a paratrooper I enjoyed both of them and would recommend both to anyone who has an interext in military history!
  • I've done some of this route in our RV and on a MC.

Try Route 25 North from Brunswick, then Route 17 North to Charleston and beyond. If the weather is good, take the ferry in NC and visit the barrier islands (Ocracoke, Nags Head...etc) which is Rt12. Then across the Chesapeake Bay on RT13 and hit the Delmarva area to the Cape May ferry...then your on your own! RT301 is also a nice option in many stretches.
  • Have a good trip. When coming through SC, here are some suggestions. Hunting Island State Park. James Island County Park in Charleston. Huntington Beach State Park near Pawleys Island SC.
  • Are you looking for Interstate travel or back roads? We want to take that journey next year but prefer the back roads....following...Dennis

  • The East Coast is a smorgasbord of great cities and sites along I-95.

Savannah, Charleston, Raleigh, Richmond, Washington, Philly. I've camped at Liberty Harbor in Hoboken and would walk to the subway every day.

Sounds like a great trip to me.
  • I'm odd like that. I tend to want to go north in the winter. Drove to Colorado last year at that time. Had a wonderful trip.
  • Watch the weather very closely! You could find yourself stuck somewhere along the way.
