Some manufacturers do that push thing for the setting and constantly display the room temp but what you describe sounds like a bad thermostat. China is about as good making thermostats as they are at making dog food. Have you tried disconecting the furnace wire to see if the HP will continue to run without that circuit? Or was that what you were talking about in your post? Some type of digital control?
