I've always been told that the unwritten "cardinal" rule for awnings, both manual and electric, is to roll them up when absent from the rig or inside for the night. If you need any kind of strapping to secure them because of wind/weather conditions, they shouldn't be out either. Only takes a minute of so to roll them up or you can take your chances; mother nature or murphy's law will beat your a$$ every time.:C
