Awning RECALLS

Now that you have all done your government bashing, the reason for the notice is a release from liability. You have been informed of the issue and if you choose to use your RV or trailer you are doing so at your own risk. This gets Dometic off the hook for any additional damage caused because you decided to use your RV despite knowing of this issue. The NHTSA is also advising you not demanding that you not use your RV until the awning is repaired. This is still a free choice country and you can still do any stupid thing you want to.

Sometimes a manufacturer will instigate the request for a recall to limit their liability for additional damage.

Kinda like the late 70's when we were warned not to fly in DC-10s full of Pintos with Firestone 500 tires on them because you might crash into Three Mile Island, and then get covered with asbestos.

Gee, the old-fashioned manual operated Dometic awnings have also been known to "unfurl" while driving. Why wasn't there a recall on the millions of those that are out there? Some folks (myself included) have devised or installed an awning lock to prevent this from happening.

The report didn't mention anything about the awning frame being deployed. It stated that the awning material could unfurl. Unless secured, any awning, either manual or powered, could unfurl.

Now my awning along with my booze and cigarettes have a gov't warning!

"The motor powered awnings and awning motor service kits were manufactured between February 13, 2013 and April 9, 2013."

If your trailer or your awning is not just off the line, I really don't think you have to worry. My 2013 was manufactured August 2012. I'm in the clear.

OK, you guy got the word from the Federal Government.
None of you can drive on the highway until you get this fixed. If you are in an RV park, stay there. If you are en-route and have stopped for fuel, stay there. If you are at home or have the coach in storage, leave the coach where it is. I am sure that any repairs will be by a mechanic coming to your site, wherever you are. Yeah, right. :B
