1K of engine torque will equal several times that at the differential. You have to multiply the trans gear ratio X the diff ratio, then multiply that times the engine torque. Then double that number, as the torque converter can double the amount of torque.
Applying 1000+ pounds of torque as done by OP can have seriou$ con$equence$. :(
For instance, a Dana 70 is rated for 7000 ft-lbs of torque. I broke 3 teeth on my Dana 70 trying to pass a car. Under torque, the differential case will actually flex, so you loose gear mesh, which in turn breaks teeth. - J_R2ExplorerYou must slide under coach till you can see the brake drum. Approximately 3 ft, half of you. Thats where you hit the drum, not rims. That's why must be chocked.
- jorbill2orExplorer IIRear wheels only are spring brakes ( parking brakes) air pushes the springs back and pad/ shoes off the drum/ disk .. With drums you con normally see the pads on the drum .. But give them both a good wack same for discs . Wack don't smash ( technical term ;-) )
- Mr_Mark1ExplorerOk, now it's time for a silly question as I'm not really sure. I know that air pressure is what keeps the brake pads off of the disk. So, when we release the air, do all the brakes on all wheels rest on the disk?
If so, how do you know which one is stuck? Or, do you just hit'm all.
MM. - J_R2ExplorerBefore you do anything, be sure all wheels are chocked. When you apply hammer and brakes release, it's off to the races.

Can't see a rear end job on a DP being anything other than expensive, unless only one gear is damaged (which I doubt).
.........Good lesson learned here's hoping the fix is quick and not expensive ! - jorbill2orExplorer IITapping the big hammer on the brake shoes is a old proven trick to free up the brake shoes or as recommended applying light torque In reverse then forward can be done first . But as the op found out , the diesel can put out massive torque breaking things ... Like twisting your driveshaft off., or the rear gears Do not apply much throttle! Good lesson learned here's hoping the fix is quick and not expensive !
- danagerExplorerBe prepared to use the correct "F word" several times. Many mechanics will also tell you that force applied with profanity is exponentially more effective.
