Very scary to hear about the tires. Did you pay much attention to their pressure? What brand and model were they, so we might be alerted?
By expensive road service, was that because you bought the tire from them, or did you mean the spot service itself was the expense. If the katter is the case, many people pay $80/yr or so for roadside assistance plans like Good Sams and other similar companies (you can search the forums for many discussions of pros and cons). Also, many RV insurance policies (like Progressive) include free roadside assistance.
I really have wondered just how hard it would be to bring my own jack and do the change. I am not sure how small the jack itself could be (storage issue) and still be adequate for the job. Does anyone on this thread do their own flat changes?
