Karebear, you will find the coach easier to drive as time goes on, which makes it that much more fun.
The shades slide up and down by grasping the bottom metal 'part' that you will find to have dropped to the lowest part of the shade-mount/valance. It is made with a 'finger grip' section. Just get in there and raise it. You should see that the shade is in 2 parts, translucent and 'room darkening'. They both work the same way and the unit is really one piece. They are held in place by tension 'strings' that are attached at the bottom corners of the valance on a little spool. If you loop the string another time around, it might do the trick. Do it with both shades at the top. To keep the shade level, each side should be adjusted. In addition, I found that the spools were only held by sheet metal screws that are just screwed into the wooden valance, and easily loosen after attempting to adjust the shades. I have replaced a couple with a nut/machine screw arrangement thru the valance so it will be a permanent fix.
To figure out how it worked, I removed the whole assembly from the coach and fixed it in my workshop.
