We are preparing for our trip to Alaska. We just purchased a Smart Car for Two. We wanted a small car for mainly city driving and one we could tow 4 down. We have been towing the Prius on a dolly but weight of car at nearly 3,000 lbs and dolly added was significant. The hassle of the setup was a bit of a bother which was ok for longer trips with longer stays but not easy for trips where we would travel daily, So our search began and it was predominantly in the sub compacts. Then we met some folks with a large A towing a Smart so we stopped and spoke with them. Well they were in love with the car and owned two of them now. We were surprised at the size of the doors for entry and the roomy interior for two. It was more roomy than things like the Fit and Scion Xa (now I believe d). Light weight at 1800 lbs and safety rated at 4 stars. So it was then to drive one. Two weeks ago we went to dealer-only one in WI- and the agreement was it had to drive ok on freeway as well as city streets. It did not have to be great as we are only using for shorter trips and the ability to tow with an automatic transmission 4 down and light weight was the driver of this decision. Well to my surprise it handled fine on the freeway and it was a windy day and spring pot holes abound. It was not a full-sized handling or SUV but for a smaller light weight vehicle it was very acceptable and fun. The transmission allows for manual or automatic and the manual is quicker and auto is quite slushy but nice option when one needs a hand free. So it met our standards and left with our new Smart. I decided I needed some time with it and had a trip planned to northern Wi and then to UP of Michigan. About 1000 miles round trip. I took the Smart. Well it got a test. Ice, snow and rain and it performed very well. It was fun and I got 49 mpg and I worked it out pretty well with 70-75 mph on freeways. The heated seats are the best I have had and work for therapy as well as keeping one warm. Surprising storage which perfectly accommodates RVers who are used to nooks and crannies. Have made arrangements for Blue Ox install. We were not planning on taking toad to Alaska but have decided to take the Smart. Will purchase the sheild that extends from moho to toad. By the way the biggest danger in the Smart is the people who stare and forget how close they are as they inspect or watch you as they turn a corner and nearly hit the stopped car ahead. For those interested in the Smart-it does not have center arm rest so I found one after market and installed yesterday and it is great. It also is without cruise and I will also add that aftermarket as they are available. Now on the BT Cruiser-the barrel chair is gone, the valances and blinds are out, the dinette cushions are being recovered, we are adding two fold up recliners that we are covering to match dinette. Carpet will be out soon and replaced by Allure Vinyl in main living area. Valances will be reshaped and recovered and drapes will replace the blinds. Should be a nice color change and losing the barrel chair opened up options to use the folding recliners. As I have mentioned previously in this thread they are very comfortable and space efficient. Wife is adding some memory foam and metal arm padding and cover and then covering the entire chair fabric. Final change is a new countertop and sink and fixtures and a table to match for dinette. So a big interior change and a fun toad and we are ready to hit the road on July 13. By the way it is a 2005 BT with rear bedroom.
