Happy, that is how the unit is supposed to work...when you reach 1/4 tank the gen shuts down. Only thing I can think of is that it wasn't an option in that year.
I know that old heater trick too. Basically it gives you some more radiator surface. So running the gen and the house air lets you stay cool and keep the engine happier.
