Chaz, look at the paint can for the paint you used to see what the main solvent is. It's probably xylene. You can try a commercial paint stripper then clean any residue with xylene. Test an inconspicuous area first with both chemicals. The fiberglass gelcoat is pretty stable and "should not" be affected by either chemical if not on too long.
Yah, I considered masking off a swoosh, but I guess as you found out, it's just too hard to get a smooth curve with tape.
