Basement door rusty hinges

The hinges on my basement doors have gotten rusty and now have brown rusty streaks going down the doors. The hinges are beneath the trim bar and I have no idea how to remove and replace/clean them as well as the door up. Have no idea what to use since I don't want to damage the door but that hinge is nasty.

Thank you,
Chris

  • I know that WD40 is not the best rust remover or lubricant, but keep in mind that the OP stated the stains are running down his painted door. I would be very careful what I sprayed on the hinge that could run onto the paint when he's doing it or later as it dripped.
  • I work on Ford Model T's so I am very used to dealing with rust. The best penetrating oil that we in the Model T world have found is a 50/50 mix of acetone and transmission fluid mixed in an oil can and applied to the rusted area. Any penetrating oil requires patience as none work instantly. Spray some on, wait a day then spray some more then try to move the rusted part. usually with the 50/50 mix, the parts break loose quickly.
  • Use a penetrating spray, and not wd40, you want a lube that will not attract dirt and grime.Do this two times a year and you won't be disappointed .
  • Get some WD40 or other lubricant with a spray tube and force it up into the hinges.
