Most fixtures now come with a molded plastic sealing gasket to fit between the fixture and the lavatory so no other sealing is necessary. If your new one does not, use plumber's putty rolled and formed to fit under the outer lip, then clean off the putty that is squeezed out when you tighten the fixture down.
