Without a lot more details regarding your rig, the shower we're working with, your wife's stature, height of the step in-and-out, etc., it is hard to make a call. I concur (to a point) that you must mount whatever grab bars to structure. However, not all rigs are built with sufficient structure that can be point loaded. To explain, the total strength of say a vacuum bonded, aluminum framed wall is fantastic for the purpose of being a wall - AS A COMPOSITE. Now, screw something into any one of those aluminum elements expecting it to withstand forces that can easily exceed a few hundred pounds for even a 100 pound woman and you could end up in a bad situation! I have helped many out in the proper installation for grab bars and access assists in both RVs and home applications. A good starting point is to touch base with your camper's manufacturer and see what they are willing to tell you about the framing - you might be surprised how helpful they can be when you mention a disabled camper. If not, you can do some poking around - but let's wait till we get there. Even the weakest walls in a camper can be reinforced to handle the loading. For instance, I have often placed sheet steel to span a couple of framing elements in the walls and over a large area with multiple attachments to those elements to spread the load and then mount the bars to the sheet using load-rated toggles drilled through the sheet such that the wing catches on the metal. Food for thought to get this going! Happy camping!
