Me Too. Maybe the PO got some surplus/free batteries out of some oddball application and made'em fit.
Can you post a picture, and list the dimensions of the batteries? Or get the Group Number? Might be able to see it with a light and mirror if it's on a label somewhere on the battery.
Height of compartment at the opening?
If I could, I think I'd see if I could carefully disconnect (do the NEGATIVE first). Then put a HD lawn bag down and quickly lay the battery on its side to pull it out. Measure and see if there's a less tall battery.
