One needs to make sure what the implications of this are.
It does not mean that 6V batteries are more "rugged". 6v batteries must supply twice the current, so their plates have to be twice the size. Since 6V batteries are supplying twice the current of 12V batteries at all times, their plates erode twice as fast as 12V plates over the battery's lifetime.
