've used a 'Continuous Duty' solenoid for battery isolation for several years. You power/activate, it with a 'switched' power wire. Using this method you only have the excess draw when the alternator is spinning.
Our Itasca Class C came that way as wired by Winnebago - when you turn the ignition switch on, a continuous duty solenoid gets activated to connect together the coach battery(ies) and the engine starting battery. I was under the impression that most Class C motorhomes were wired that way?
I changed out the stock solenoid for a more robust one with silver allow contacts to stop an intermittent coach battery charging problem while traveling down the road.
That's how mine is wired. The OEM solenoid failed after only a year or 2. It replacemnt is still going strong after about 8-9 years
