Chris Gibson's SmartGauge causes a lot of controversy; there are some who insist that it simply can't work. It makes two claims:
-- It is simpler than an hour counter, and,
-- It is ultimately more accurate.

A lot of their market is military vehicle where the troops want a simple per cent of charge and nothing more. A big part of the appeal is that it doesn't require you to wire a shunt.
I use an hour counter and I find that the two numbers I watch are:
-- Amps in/out, that is, the rate of charge or discharge.
-- Hours down, that is, how many hours do I have to recoup to achieve full recharge?
The actual voltage is largely irrelevant as my batteries are never at rest, they are always charging or discharging.
