Thanks all for the tips and thoughts.
I seek a simple and low cost means to monitor the house batteries. With a simple voltage meter, I realize every little current draw from a light & appliance will influence the reading. I assume I would be more interested in the change in voltage rather than the actual numbers. When going to bed with everything turned off (fridge not cycling either), that would seem to be the ideal time to note the voltage.
pnichols, A two decimal place meter would be better, but I really like the style and simplicity of installation of the single decimal round one mentioned earlier by Dakzuki. I don't think I'll be needing two decimals of detail for a "general" battery health reading.
After some research and measuring, I will be ordering a round green lit LED version of the one Dakzuki pointed out.
I will assume the lit readout can be left on all the time then. As Snowman9000 warns, the location planned won't be shinning towards the bedroom. Good warning for all to note.
burlmart, After I get our pictures organized, I will share this year's adventure.
Thanks guys for all the input.
Ron, I just measured the current draw of the little round meter. I got .2mA which is stupid low....in fact so low I find it hard to believe. It had a bit of surge current firing up but settled down to that number.
