battery charge question

Still figuring the rv thing out. I was under the impression that the alternator charged the house batteries it seems that it maintains it more than charges it? My kids had dvd players and tablets charging. We hadn't been on shore power for a couple days and the battery monitor shows up as a low charge now. Thoughts?

  • there are several elements to your question for a decent answer. To know the output of the Alternator would be nice. When I bought my coach I had an alt. that output 95 amps it was hard to run the accesories such as Refer., furnace and other power draws. When I canged the Alternator I put in a 130 amp oneand have had no problems since. If your alternator is charging the house batteries you most likeley have a battery Isolator . The charge line from the Alt. will come into the isolater and be distibuted to the coach andchasis batteries. If ther is an Isotaor then you should see about 14.5 volts coming in and you can mesure at each distribution post what is going out.. Although your question is a simple one the answer may require more information about your set-up
  • Some MH's do not charge the house batteries with the alternator. Some models of Travel Supreme did not, until later when the installed a B.I.R.D. in the line and then it would only charge if the chassis batteries were at full charge.
  • It does charge on shore power. What I researched made me think that it doesn't charge as fast while driving especially if there are sources draining it. I just wanted to ask the community.
  • The alternator should charge the batteries-- easy test with a digital voltmeter:

Check voltage at the battery (chassis and then house)with engine off, shore power and generator off. 12.7 or more is a fully charged battery. 12.2 is 50% discharged.

Start engine and run at high idle (like 1200 RPM). Recheck voltages at battery. Assuming batteries not deeply discharged, voltage should be 13.7-14.2

Turn off engine and turn on some loads to dissipate surface charge. Plug in to shore power and check voltage at the house battery. If smart charger, should start around 14, if not smart one, about 13.5.

I do not know if the chassis battery charges when on shore power on your coach-- Winnebago can tell you if the manual does not.
  • Hi,

The alternator does charge the house battery. How many amp-hours of capacity do you have?
