Battery desulfator

Someone as a gift gave me a battery desulfator (sp?)..You put this at the point it goes into the coach..I have brand new house batteries...Is this snake oil or does it help extend the life of the batteries?

The smart mode converter/chargers have the DESULF MODE built-in to run around 15.5VDC for 15 minutes or so every 20 hours to burn off the possible crud deposits on the battery cells.

These deposits usually occur when you do alot of 50% to 90% charge states charging which will eventually shorten the life of your batteries.

I would install a smart mode converter/charger system and allow all of this to happen automatically.

The newer trailers manf has started to add the smart mode converter/charger around the 2012 models and up.

The smart mode converter/chargers really take care of your batteries automatically for long life...

    just my thoughts

I have used the Epsoms salts on some old GC batteries and it was a temporary fix. I got another year out of them. They were in an actual golf cart.
  • Batteries are brand new...the orig batteries since new 9/2008 were OK and I could get by with them for another 6 months or so but would read under 12 v when inverter on in about 2 hours....so I bit the bullet and replaced them...I don't dry camp often but lately I've had to go places with virtually no notice and didn't want them to fail me when I needed them..thank you all for your responses...I just didn't want to insult the person who gave me the gift. They don't know that much about RV's and wanted to help me...Too bad they didn't give me the tires I just purchased too...
  • Bully,

I have one and have decided that it is at best a means to keep a good battery good. If a battery is toast, you can leave it on there forever and still have a worthless battery. If the battery is getting a little old, it can bring it back up some. I have a 10yo battery that should be shot, but I put a charger and the little box on there when I can. That is usually for a month or more in the winter. It seems to help.

I have tried it on a battery, that was doing poorly, it gotten pretty bad. After a month it was maybe a little bit less worthless.
