First thing I would do would be to find the word 'NEG' or the symbol '-' on the battery case and make sure this is the battery terminal that goes to frame ground.
Did you add 12VDC batteries or maybe two 6VDC Batteries in series.
This is a pictorial on how the two type should be hooked up..

Let us know what type of batteries you installed 12VDC or 6VDC...
Once you get the battery terminals wired correctly then you can go looking for the REVERSE POLARITY fuess and an in-line fuse or circuit breaker close to the battery positive terminal. These are here to blow in case the battery terminals have been wired in reverse order... You need to get the batteries wired correctly otherwise as soon as you replace the blown fuses they will just blow again...
