Oh Boy King,
I get asked this a lot. Maybe because I have had the job title "Navigator".
I my not so humble opinion, there is no BEST GPS.
The operator is a big part of the consideration. Before you buy anything, try to borrow one. If you can understand how to work it - Great. If you can't borrow one, go to the stores that have dispalys and play with what you can. If you decide you might like something, go home and download the manual from their website. Can you understand that?
There is no good stand alone GPS for planning. They are mostly OK for enroute guidance. For planning, I suggest that you learn to use a computer based navigator like Strips & Treets or Street Alas. The best thing about S&T is that you used to be able to get a pretty long free trial period. I don't really pay any attention to what they do any more as we outgrew their capability and have gone to SA permanently.
Lastly, GPS is nice and convenient and all, but always have the paper on hand. That works when everything else goes on the fritz.
