best rv gps

i see different opinions. who has had theirs at least a couple of years. we have had garmins in the car/truck pulling trailer for years. sometimes they recalculate for no reason. but on the whole they have preformed well. should i try a new brand? i like the extra perks: height, weight, probane, lane access but if i travel in circles what's the point?

  • "Best" GPS is a navigator that can read a MAP....just sayin....:W....Dennis
  • We have had both Garmin and Rand McNally.
I prefer the Rand McNally over the Garmin.
You must get updates for your Rand McNally immediately. Then set up the unit for your rig.
The screen in the Rand McNally 7710 is much better to see. When approaching intersections it will show the signing virtually as it is on the road. You can adjust the distance for seeing it.
So far the Rand McNally has not sent us down the wrong road as the Garmin has tried several times.
  • Can't speak for other brands of GPS units but we sure like our TOM-TOM XXL 550-TM. We can download free updates from TOM-TOM to our computer then install same into our GPS unit.

Good luck with your choice of a GPS unit.

The newer ones recalculate, but they don't announce it. That actually makes it harder to know you've missed a turn.

Advanced Search "gps" in the Subject only. More reading than you can imagine. I don't think there is such a thing as a 'best' gps.
  • I've always used the Garmins and never had a problem. I got a Rand McNally RV model and I'm not too fond of it. When you try to type in an address to go to, it helps you type it by eliminating some of the letters and I've had several times where I couldn't enter an address because it didn't recognize the correct address. I've also planned routes and in the middle of the route it tells me that there is no "legal" route to get to my destination. Also after programming my coach info it has taken me on some small curvy mountain roads. My coach came with the Rand McNally and I've had the same issues. It may be me, but I really like the Garmin. Good luck
