Best time of year to buy?

I'm between one and two years from buying a used motorhome, and have done a lot of research on brands and floor plans. My wife and I agree that our ideal RV is a Winnebago DP with bunks so that we've got a place to put our teenagers or use for storage when they are away at school. Ideally the coach will be 4 to 8 years old.

For the last month or so I've been perusing RV Trader, Craigslist, and Ebay trying to get a sense of what's available and what they are actually selling for. What I've discovered is that RVs like what I've described are few and far between. Is this a dry time of year? Or is what we're looking for so unusual that we'd best buy the first one that meets our criteria?

Sure glad I've got a decent amount of time before we really "need" our RV!

  • Here is what I found. Buying an RV in Florida is cheaper. My guess is that older people buy them, use them and then pass away. At that point their loved ones want/need to sell them. The family may be in Mass and the RV may be in Florida so they just want rid of it. Due to this there were many deals to be had. These deals happen all year long down there.
  • It depends on where you are. In the Northern US, the best time to buy is in the fall. This is when people realize they did not use the RV much and want o sell it before they need to keep it all winter. In Arizona, the best time to buy is in the spring when people are going back home.
  • I've been on the look out for a replacement TT and have noticed that the prices of TTs by dealers has dropped quite significantly over the past 2 months.

A TT that I saw at Hershey 6 weeks ago for $22K is now advertized for $10K by the same dealer.

Not sure if this applies to your situation but out 2 local RV dealers have a lot of inventory sitting on their lots.

  • We have a bunk model. They are quite rare in a DP. Buy the first one you see that suits your needs.
  • I think prices are lower from the end of summer to late winter, but people know that so they wait until spring to put units up for sale. I don't see a lot of bunkhouses in diesel pushers so you might have not have a lot to choose from.
