Bike Rack for 2" Hitch

Greetings, I just purchased a 2013 Pleasure Way Excel and I'm ready for some fun outings. I want to purchase a sturdy metal rack that can accommodate 2 bicycles. There are many many on the market. Does anyone have a suggestion? In the alternative, if you've had experience with a front-mounted rack I'd appreciate your comparison/comments as well. Happy touring!

  • I had a front mount on my older Dodge truck when I had a truck camper, worked well, no problems with cooling etc. Now I have a DIY swing away on my Road trek as mentioned by thriftydutch. I always swing mine out of the way when sleeping just encase we would need an emergency exit. I don't expect any emergency but it is easy to do so why not?
  • I have a swagman 3 bike rack that goes in a Curt front hitch. The rack has a screw type pin to reduce movement and works well considering I can see the seats while driving. No issue with engine temperature or with hitch clearance.
  • I use an older model from Yakima that holds 2 bikes and can tilt down to open the rear door. It fits into the 2 in. receiver and is secured by a locking pin. It also has a locking plate that clamps onto the frames and keeps the bikes safely locked to the carrier. In looking for a solution, make sure it fits the frame of your bikes (overall size, tube diameter, any accessories) and the size of the tray of some models fits the tire. Look for ways to secure the bikes and carrier against theft. Finally check that the bikes are loaded high enough to clear the ground when you exit a driveway.
  • Buy a swing away bike rack for the back that way you don't have to remove the bikes when you want to get in the rear door. I had one on a class A ones on the front and when I hit a deep dip in the road it bend my bike wheels all to hell.
