At some point GM switch to Hypereutectic pistons (2005?) to address piston slap complaints. Basically, those pistons are super-satured with silica, making them expand less, at the expense of being more brittle.
That said... The Ford V10 uses them too. I've had my share of detonation usually from a dirty MAF, but more recently from a failed EGR sensor. This las time it sounded BAD. I can't imagine driving to the point of breaking a piston, without hearing the detonation first.
