They told me 7 grand for the engine 3 to put it in (Well 30 hours at 108)
That sound more reasonable than $15K. I've always figured about 10 grand to pay someone to R&R an engine.
BTY: I went and looked more thoroughly at the listings. For some reason the truck version of that engine is $2K more. Not sure what the difference is, especially at a cost of $2K for the engine. Another option would be to buy a 502 short block and use the heads from your 8.1 on the short block. The rebuild on the heads probably would not be that bad. The heads are tall deck heads, which I think is the difference between the 2 engines (other than stroke vs bore). That would give you a higher revving block that is a beast. Shorter stroke/bigger pistons stand up to higher RPM than longer stroke/smaller pistons. The 502 block is known for surviving having the daylights run out of it at high RPM and holding up. (most boaters view the throttle as a toggle switch)
Looks like I may be a Georgian for the next couple of years... Took a look at the pan today, damage I could see is clearly blown OUT, not in, no sign of a leak other than the big one but...
As best as you can tell, that is the answer to the million dollar question. As someone else suggested, it would be interesting to discover if there was another leak - possibly in the oil cooler lines. There may be enough oil sprayed everywhere from the oil pan that it may be difficult to find the source.
