When I got my motorhome with the 8.1 it was quiet. I asked the Workhorse dealer why it was quiet compared to my pickup 8.1 and he explained that the W22 8.1 used different pistons, etc.
I thread-jacked with my own oil story. I have a 454 and the GM Performance crate engine.
The original poster has an 8.1 but your point is a good one. If he pursues a used engine he needs to be sure of the application. I got really lucky in finding a very low-mileage, truck-spec crate engine.
