Blue Ox Aladin Rebuild?

Our used towbar has 8k miles that we put on it, and since I bought it used, no telling how many miles before. While there's no problems with it, can they be checked by the manufacturer to make sure they're still road-worthy? I'd rather spend a little on preventive maintenance now that suffer a catastrophic failure on the road.

I'm looking to buy a used tow bar setup and found a used one on Craigslist. Its a Roadmaster Trackbar system with a mounting bracket. The brackets have some surface rust, based on the pictures. I'm just wondering if its worth looking at? Any advice. ( I really want to get my Jeep Cherokee set up to tow - I'm tired of having my wife follow me in her minivan).

    Thanks,

    Thor,
Most tow bars are pretty tough working units. I've not heard of any that are ones to stay away from. So, unless the one you're thinking about is totally thrashed, bent, drug on the ground etc. you'll most likely find that it will be a good deal. I've purchased two different makes/models of tow bars from Ebay and have been thoroughly satisfied each time. Tow bars are not rocket science. They are simply sliding units with mechanisms in place to lock and unlock them. They've got some pivot points too.

When I received my last one, a Blue OX Aladdin, it seemed just a tad loose in certain respects so, I just simply took the thing apart and replaced a washer here, a spacer there and that was about it. The lock mechanisms were very simple to disassemble, check for wear, (which there was minimal) lube up and re-assemble. In the end, it works flawless and I know all about how it works and what kind condition things are in internally.

Many folks have a hard time buying something used. Well, that's up to them. I myself, really don't have any problem buying used. We tow our '11 GMC Sierra 1500 Extended Cab 4x4 with it. That tow bar, when new, was almost $1,000.00. I gave $400 for it with cables, Blue Ox curly Que Pig tail, cover, pin for a base plate and more. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

  • They did a tune-up on mine at Daytona Speedway several years ago during Speedweeks. We were parke in the infield and they just stopped by the MH and did the service. I haven't seen them there since, but may have just been unaware they were around.

Look on the Blue Ox website for their event schedule .... find one near you and have them do a rebuild/refurbish. I had my towbar redone at a show last winter.
  • Bigger rallys have a station to check your tow bar. I use Quartzsite about every 3 years.
  • Contact blueox and they will give you your options, including up grade to a newer one or rebuild.
  • Yes, Blue Ox goes to Quartzsite every year. I've had ours 'inspected' and they have replaced a part or two over the years. Unless it needs a total rebuild, they just charge $25 for the adjustments/inspections.

    MM.
  • I have a Roadmaster product and have taken my tow bar to them at shows where they have booths for a tune up. I know in Quartzsite, that both Blue Ox and Roadmaster have a tune up booth.
