Bought the wrong motorhome!!!

I know you have been following my quest for a MH. Been searching, and learning from the experts since January. Found a nice 1997, 38 Monaco Dynasty and got carried away by its beauty, condition, equipment, etc., but underestimated size impact and didn't think thru how it was to really be used. Drove it home, 600 miles, ran great, really a pleasure after the old gas MH I had 10 years ago, but once we got it home than, where do we put it. We moved some shrubs, flowers, cut some tree limbs and got it parked. Have carport on order for it. Realize now, it really is for two people to full time it and stay close to the main highways, not for weekenders or a week or two at a time in the summer for 4 adults and 3 kids. Or go off in the boondocks for a few days of deer hunting. Or take the families to a museum for a day, or to the beach for a couple days. We live in country so to speak and coming down the local, narrow road was an eye opener for this Wide Body mode of transportation, to say nothing of trying to park it. It is for sale.

Now the search is for 34 foot absolutely max. Won't even consider a 35 footer and no Wide Bodys. Thought about the 32 or 34 Dynastys in the same vintage but believe they are wide body. Will still search for diesel pusher but want two sofa sleepers plus booth dinette sleeper and a rear QB sleeper. Diesel pusher with gasoline generator Ok but no LP Generators. Might even fall back to Gaser up front, but only if we strike out on the diesel pusher search.

I have reviewed my earlier posts regarding construction, etc, so starting all over again. There is a 2000 Coachman Catalina, listed as 33 foot but believe it is the 34 foot model that opened my eyes to the fact there are coaches out there that are DP and can sleep 8 and are not more than 34 foot.

I am humbled and chagrin about all of this, but do want to thank all of you for your help thus far and will be seeking your guidance in the future, I am sure. FP

  • I agree with the other posters. I have a wide body 38' and take it where ever I want. As they suggested try a couple of trips.
  • What you need to do is borrow or rent a motorhome in the size you want and see if it really makes that much difference. You just bought a used motorhome and you want to turn right around and sell it? Like somebody already pointed out, a wide body is only 6" wider and the different in 3' in length may be something you can't even tell. There's a huge difference in a 30 footer versus a 45 footer, but I'm not sure you'll even be able to tell much difference in what you're talking about.

I also think that possibly you are giving up too quickly. Those narrow roads won't look so bad with more experience. You're probably going to lose money to trade again.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • I haven't seen any class A that is "ideal" for four adults and three kids, especially for two weeks...unless you all already share a studio apartment. ;)

Class A and deer hunting....yeah, not ideal especially if you tag one or more (avid hunter here)

IMHO those two arrangements would be best served with a two bedroom rig, ie a fifth wheel or TT
  • My inlaws take their 40' MH everywhere we take our 33.5' and we're normally at state parks in the middle of no where. I think a little more practice getting used to it is in order.
  • Just about all Class A's and C's are wide-body now (8.5 feet wide).

You are going to really watch the specs. to get a narrower MH. They will more likely be Class B's or smaller B+'s.

You may have to get used to wide-bodies since it is the norm.
  • The difference between a wide body ( 8 1/2 feet ) and a regular body ( 8 feet ) is only 3 inches on each side, believe me you will get used to it real fast. But the decision is yours. Good luck
  • There are quite a few folks out there with Class A's of your caliber that boondock. I see them too when we are out. Are you sure you are not just overwhelmed by the newness of this new RV? Sometimes buyer's remorse is just fear of the unknown. Take it out again on a couple of more trips before you jump to another model.
  • A lot of people rent a storage unit for their rigs - keeps it out of the weather and you don't have to drive it down the narrow roads. Buy stuff specifically for the MH (don't take stuff from the house each time) and you can ready to go in an hour or two.

No reason why you can't make it work rather than taking a bath on trying to sell it so quickly after your purchase.
