Hi Path, having just been through a similar experience. My understanding is Ford calipers are famous for sticking, espically on rigs that don't get much use. Something about they used ceramic pistons rather than steel.
Just a thought, you may have had a caliper lock up, and that may have been the cause of heating up the brakes. Rather than which gear you were in. That was the issue in my case
