I wouldn't worry about it. The protections are built-in.
That said... nothing wrong with scrubbing a little speed periodically.
One thing to keep in mind is that retarding power through the transmission still generates heat. While I have never noticed my trans temp going up while engine braking, I have noticed that heavy engine braking will keep it from going down after a long climb.
