First, do the check and see if the recall was done on that chassis. Recalls are not suggestions and should not be taken as such.
Next, what you have had happen sounds very much like wet brake fluid boiling. This is not unexpected in a vehicle that is not driven often and has not had the brakes flushed regularly. That may be all it takes to bring the brakes back from scary.
I only worked on foundation brakes for about two years, but we tested for wet brake fluid. When the fluid got wet enough to boil in any retarding (long or level braking) there was often corrosion damage to the system as well. My suggestion is that you get this attended to promptly.
