Buddy messed up...

My buddy recently bought his first RV - a 2014 Entegra Aspire. He sold his house and they took off for Alaska. Along the way they stopped at a little mom and pop convenience store to top off the tank. He saw the green nozzle and put in about 40 gallons.

He made it down the road about 100 miles and the engine started running "funny". He pulled into a rest area and shut it down. He tried the generator to see if it would run and it ran for a bit and then quit.

After trouble shooting, he eventually checked the receipt for the fuel and found out the green handle had been E85 Ethanol. After a lot of back and forth with Good Sam he and the mechanic eventually drained the tank of about 70 gallons, changed out the filters, and blew out the lines. The put in about 10 gallons of diesel, got it running and he took off.

He's still driving it, but I'll bet he has major problems later on. I can't imagine all that gas playing well with the injectors, sensors, etc. My Dad's hired hand put gas in our combine and fried it. I have my fingers crossed for him, but don't think this will end well...especially in the wilds of Alaska.
  • I learned about the european-style green handles in Las Vegas when renting a Harley. Reportedly a european renter in Vegas put the green handle into the Harley's tank he was returning and filled the tank with Diesel. Works both ways - perhaps some additional standardization would help.
  • I recently posted on my problems with putting Diesel Exhaust Fluid in my Ford. I had to have the entire fuel system replaced. I've been told that gasoline will cause the same kinds of problems over the long run. If it gets to the point where some very expensive repairs are required, I'd suggest they discuss the situation with their insurance company. My company covered my error under the comprehensive portion of my insurance.
  • He should likey change the oil and filter as well. Gas may have been forced past the rings into the crankcase.
