Bunks in motorhomes

We absolutely love our current motorhome and have it maintained like crazy! BUT, we want bunks and find that they aren't very popular with too many manufacturers we'd consider. The location of the bunks are important to us and the only manufacturer that positions them away from the bedroom is a Prevost converter. Is a Prevost converter my only solution, or has anyone heard of manufacturer's custom design a current floorplan, ie. Newmar, Monaco, Tiffin? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Tommy

  • At a lower price level, Winnebago has a specialty vehicles division that builds mobile offices, command posts, mobile clinics, and accessible motorhomes. The division can build whatever will fit one of a number of different shells they use. When I was looking at them a few years ago, they were building mostly on entry level A-gasser shells, and non-slide Cs, for accessible RVs.

At the other end of the scale, there is Newell in Miami, Oklahoma. Every build is a custom design. AFAIK, everything building now is on their big 45' platform, quite expensive, legendary quality.

Then there are the coach converters outside the RV industry, producing bunkhouse designs of many different capacities for the entertainment industry, and other businesses that require employees to sleep in transit. Not all Prevost, converters work also with other shells and chassis available in North America.

Similarly, almost every build on a heavy duty straight truck chassis is custom, to the initial buyers specific needs. We've had chemistry labs, seismic acquisition and processing centers built on HDTs, in addition to field housing for employees. Hardly ever put something into a motorcoach shell or onto a RV chassis. Sometimes what you need for a life on the road is outside the box defined as RV industry.

Foretravel in Nacogdoches,Texas has a 2012 model IH 45 on their lot that has bunks.
    It is stock number 6550p.
Take a look at their sight under preowned

Fleetwood had a really nice floor plan with the discovery 42A. The rear bedroom had a full bath between it and the master. I believe the model was discontinued for 2013

Dan, That's a very interesting floorplan for sure. It must be a keeper for the one's who bought it as there aren't even any for sale used. The only kind I've liked happen to be in a Prevost, but I wanted to make sure I'm not missing any out there. Thanks for your suggestion.

Newmar is the only manufacturer that does custom like that..but be prepared for the upcharge.

Newmar would be a serious consideration. It's a very quality product. Thanks for your input.

I provided a couple to consider. Newmar, Monaco, Tiffin... Yes, converters who convert Prevost shells seem they've been flexible in the past. If Prevost is the only solution, I would consider about a 2007 model. Thanks.
