Burning smell as in a wood fire or the very distinctive smell from an electrical problem?
It smells like electrical wiring.
The wiring on the AC, where the 120 volts is connected to the AC unit, could have worked loose and is causing an arcing/smell, especially when the starting load is applied to the AC unit.
This can be checked by removing ALL power coming to the AC by throwing the AC breaker and pulling the wiring cover that is under the plastic ceiling cover. You will see the wires coming from the side of the ceiling to connect with the AC unit. Check them for signs of arcing and tightness.
