burnt spark plug wires

Both of my trips into the Rockys I burnt spark plug wires. On the near flat here the Ozarks and to the southeast US, doesn't present any problems. I am having new plug wires installed later week for a trip to New Mexico. I have ask the shop to look for some high heat or better wires. Any thoughts?

IF your chassis is a Workhorse they have an air flow improvement kit that can help.. Plus there are higher quality wires that help.

Only once have I ever burned Spark Plug Wires... On a 2001 Dodge Neon.
  • Not a known problem with 8.1L engines. It is a problem with some motor home brands that did not follow the design specs and created a front cap for their coaches that does not allow enough air flow.
Many coaches with the 8.1L engine do not have this problem. The Taylor Extreme plug wires is the cheapest cure.
  • Know problem with 8.1. There was/is a kit to direct air flow to those wires. Pretty sure it was covered by factory. Good wires and direct air flow, as stated above, solved the problem.
  • That chassis was known for doing that. Go with the quality wires and then try and direct some airflow toward the wires as others have done. Something like dryer hose from the grill toward the plugs/headers.

I bought the Taylor Hi temp wires from Summit when the std 8 mm Beldon wires burned twice. They are 10.4 mm thick and have FG soxs that go over the spark plugs, they were about $150 and are still holding up after 9 years and 70k miles of use.
    Ditto.

  • I would go to someplace like Jegs or Summit racing and get some wires that are designed to be used with headers.
