Many families, larger than the ones we have today, camped in motor homes without slides for many decades. Slides have only been around for the last 15 or so years. Get what you can afford and is workable for you. The last thing you want to do is spend money on your RV and never be able for it to leave the driveway.
15 years?? I would guess 25-30 would be a lot closer. my 1999 chieftain had two of them and they were around for many years prior to that.
now there are/were different types of slide systems, I remember a TT with a large slide that had the ceiling sagging in the middle. shortly after that on large/long slides they started putting a "wall" about in the middle to support them.
the main thing is if you get a unit with slides, be sure to check out how liveable it is with them in. dealer's never like to show them with the slides in, only out. I didn't even extend my living room slide when I just stopped for an overnight as it was perfectly useable in. the bedroom slide blocked off one drawer when in so put rarely used stuff in that drawer.
my BIL bought their class A about the same time I bought mine and he did not want slides. salesmen warned him about resale but he didn't care. his widow had a tough time selling it and it sold very cheap as a result.
