It is most likely the exhaust. You can open up the doghouse and see how it is routed.
I think some people have talked about placing additional insulation or heat blankets in the area, but it doesn't really bother most people. When the vehicle was new, there are several heat shields on the top of the exhaust. No telling whether those are still in place or not. A lot of times the shields fall off and nobody knows about it.
