Buying a New Motorhome

Sorry, I know this topic has been covered many times, however when I did a search, I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

I am looking at a new Tiffin Phaeton 42lh and a dealer has one with the colors and options my wife and I want. The dealer is about 135 miles from me and I have no experience with them at all. I have emailed back and forth with one of the salesman this week and plan on driving up to see coach on Saturday.

My questions are:
Is 30% off sticker still the number I should be looking For?
Anybody have experience with RV Corral in Eugene, Or., that they would be willing to share?
Is there any place to find out trade in values on my current Moho?
When I bought my current Moho (2007 Allegro bus), I didn't put any money down, is that still an option?
Is current interest rates running around 4 to 5%?

Thanks in advance and any other advice would be appreciated.
  • Last October we purchased a used DP from them and were very pleased with the experience. We negotiated the purchase price for their unit and the trade in value for our unit over through emails and the telephone. We had them arrange financing for us and it was a better rate than I could find.

We spent the night in their parking area and found a couple of issues that they fixed the next day. We then went to a RV park close by for a week, found a couple of more issues, called them and they had us bring the MH back in to them. They made the required fixes and we headed home.

We were very pleased with everyone we dealt with. The only thing I don't know is wiggle room on a new motorhome that they have.

  • In my years of negotiating deals on machinery for industrial bookmaking and printing machines I found that most sellers respond well when you treat them as a valued supplier and not in an adversarial way. Find a salesperson that you are comfortable with and then just say to them "what is the best price you can offer me and we still remain friends?" Most of the time they will enjoy the opportunity to work with someone not trying to beat them to death. This assumes your salesperson is a good one.

Times are pretty good in the new RV business. Traditionally you can expect 28% off list price. Maybe less than that today.
  • To the OP ---

You've picked one of the most popular rigs out there today and are buying at a time of year when camping season is approaching and sales are probably at their high point. The situation puts you at a disadvantage with leverage to negotiate.

Decide how badly you want that rig and what your max price is, then be prepared to walk away if you can't get there.
  • We purchased our first MH in July 2013. I did look into where I could get the best rate ahead of time. We got 30 % off MSRP. We also financed through the dealer as they did have the best rate. Not putting money down in these times probably isn't going to work anymore. Banks want you to have some skin in the game and usually run from someone who can't come up with one.
  • You can expect about 27% off MSRP. RV Corral has a great service department as long as you close all your windows when leaving a coach there. (Lot's of Dust)
Sales department leaves a lot to be desired. I have had my coach about 18 months and have yet to receive a call from salesperson to see how I like it or(?)But again great service department. Probably would look at BYoung RV in Portland for Tiffin product based purely on sales department at RV Corral.
  • Again thanks for the comments.
I have a RV repair shop, less than 30 miles from home, that can do the warranty work for Tiffin. This is one of the reasons I want to stick with a Tiffin, if I can.
So, all I need from RV Corral is a good deal. Probably wouldn't take it back to them ever. That is why I don't care where I buy the coach, if the deal is right, I have no problem traveling. They just happen to have the floor model, most of the options we want and in the colors my wife and I like.
If it doesn't work, I walk and don't look back. I am not deperate in anyway to make a deal.
I have been to Byoung Rv and they were very nice and seemed easy to work with, they just did not have on the lot what we wanted.
  • I just purchased a new 2014 Tiffin 34 TGA. Prior to buying I talked to both RV Corral and BYoung RV. Per recommendations on this forum I contacted Sherman RV in Sherman, Ms. Sherman beat the local rv dealers best price by about $20,000 (approx. 28% less than MSRP). I also financed through them for a better rate than I could get locally.
The people at BYoung and RV Corral seemed nice enough (although RV Corrals salesperson wasn't good about returning calls when he said he would) but they couldn't come close to the deal I got in Sherman. When I picked up the motor home it had been completely prepped and the tech spent a full day walking me through it's operation. There were no added fees or costs the total price of the motor home was the price originally quoted. The actual in person sales transaction took less than 30 minutes.
They allowed us to stay on their property and said we coud stay as long as we wanted until we were confident everything about the coach was right. We could not have asked to be treated better or more fairly.
We didn't have a trade in so I don't know how, if at all, it would have changed our experience but calling Sherman and asking for a quote was the best move I've made in quite a while.
    Good luck!
