Buying a used Diesel

Thanks to all who responded. I feel safer about possibly buying a diesel.

I use 8 oz. of 2 cycle oil per 20 gal of fuel in my 98 chevy and it made the injector pump quieter. Low sulfur fuel causes havic on the 2000 and older diesels since the lubrication of the injector pump is reduced by the low sulfur fuel.

This has worked for me for quite a few years now since my truck was built before LSD or ULSD fuel came out.

Actual BTU content of ULSD is 1% lower than LSD. 2 MPG??? that is a LOT!

We have had no problems with ours and I can't even see any difference in MPG.

This is true, but the pollutants are not sulphur.

Some fuel hoses had problems too. Generator and Aqua/Hydro Hot lines required replacements.

Both Caterpillar and Cummins IN WRITING say all their on-highway engine are backwards compatible for ULSD.

Neither endorses the need for additives.

As John said, Cummins did have some issues with lift pump seals that leaked, requiring replacement-- not a big deal.

Some of the Cummins 8.3 had to have the seals in their lift pumps replaced but that is the mist I have seen or heard.

If you are really worried about it, this stuff works very well: Stanadyne Lubricity Formula It works really well in the newer engines too!
