By pass El Paso

On my recent trip from California to Florida we got a lot of great advice. We followed the 10 basically from coast to coast with the exception of the 12 to bypass New Orleans. We had nice RV parks reasonably close to the freeway. My one area of concern was El Paso. The road surface was horrible and the traffic equally bad. The other cities were easy as we hit them in non-rush hour. We also hit El Paso in non-rush hour but it didn't matter. When traveling on the 10 do those of you who regularly make that trip have a way to avoid El Paso?

    Been through EL Paso at least 10 times usually between 10am and 8pm. Never had serious backup, just a slowdown. Head on through!

    Of all the urban blights we've had to traverse, El Paso was certainly not the worst. Just stay out of the right lane. 20 minutes and you're pretty much done with it.

    Candidates for worse: Salt Lake, Seattle, Portland, Tulsa, and anywhere in the Northeast.

    Well Gang,
    I too have to agree with the OP. We had very similar issues when we were directed to that seriously bad Freightliner service center called "On the Boarder Freightliner" located in El Paso. The freeways were rough, the drivers sucked and, the area sucked even worse. I too will never go through or near El Paso again.

    Totally agree. I drove in the opposite direction, from FL to CA last November. We actually visited New Orleans, and had no traffic issues there or in El Paso. However, Houston was terrible!!

    I've never had trouble in bad traffic in either New Orleans OR El Paso.

    Houston? Now that's a nightmare!

    I donno....I drove thru El Paso (on I-10) four times. No worse than anywhere else...one year, San Antonio was difficult...but really, it all depends on what you're used to. For me...generally, no worse than I-95 thru Philadelphia.
    Suggestion: get in the middle lane, slow down a bit, don't worry about the guy behind you. Once you're out of the construction area...continue on.

    We've started using Loop 375 then get back on I10. It has grades both sides of the pass, but not too extreme. Nice view from the high point. I won't go I10 thru town anymore.

    We've taken 375 (Transmountain)and picked up 62/180 toward Guadalupe Nat'l Park and then picked up 54 south ending in Van Horn. It's a very pleasant drive.

    The KOA in Van Horn with their on-site restaurant was great but that is a few miles down the road. Like 100.

    I took the Trans Mtn 2wks ago east bound. Worked great until got to I-10 on the east side. Constipation would be a good word for it.
