C-7 fan hub bearing

After reading the post about the bearing failure on the C-7 fan hub, I was just going to take a poll who has had a similar problem or is this a more isolated problem. I know forums bring out people who have problems but would like to hear if there are more who haven't has that problem. I happen to be running a C-7 that was built in 2006 and is approaching the 50,000 mile mark and was wondering if I should be more proactive at getting it changed while I am not traveling. By the way mine does not have a grease zerk.:@
  • 53,000 miles on a 2005 C7 with no fan bearing problems.

If I had to change it, I don't know if it's possible, but I'd look at installing a greasable bearing with a hose that goes to the bottom of the engine to grease it.

  • I have about 45k on mine with the original bearing (sealed/no zerk design) and have had no issues. I do remove the belt and check the bearing at least once a year for excessive play and drag.

  • I will admit this is the first I've heard of this as our Cat had the fitting and we have a Cummins now.

Having said that, if this is a known issue I'd sure be taking care of it at home rather than on the road. I'd a lot rather work on stuff in my garage than on the side of Rt 95.
  • Just read on another forum this morning where someone had a failure at 49k miles and cost him like 2k for repair. He said Cat gives that a lifespan of 40k miles. If I had that I certainly would replace it.
