Cabover Mattress replacement

Our cabover mattress has gotten wet and slighty moldy over time. Does anyone sell replacements. It is 56" by 96" and 5" thick. Any suggestions?

  • One thing I'd consider is a Froli Travel System. This is a replacement for box springs and takes up an inch or two. The advantage of this is that it helps any mattress, and it allows air to circulate underneath, preventing/mitigating mold growth.
  • I am kicking this around a bit, I have a small Toyota and weight is a big concern.

In my house I have a Lay Z Boy hideabed with a hybrid mattress in it. Hide a bed mattresses are normally horrible things, fit for only a dog to sleep on. But this is very comfortable.

I have not yet tried it in the Toy but will when time permits.

^^^ I tried to find an OMF near me with no joy. But I hear good things about them and your report bears that out.

We have under-bed storage but the whole mattress platform lifts up. If we'd had to have a hinged mattress I don't think we could have pulled off the Cutoff Mod.

    Glad you're comfortable.
  • My 'C' came equipped with a "short queen" mattress in the rear, that was marginally more comfortable than a pile of rocks. I found an "Original Mattress Factory" location near me. There aren't any in RI. but there are several next door in PA. (you can google them).
They built one for me that was kind of a mattress/box spring combination, and even hinged the bottom so that I could still get to the storage space under the foot of the bed, and get it through the door. I found some fitted sheets at Camping World (I think). Measure your space first before you go. I sleep like a baby, except I don't have to cry myself to sleep at night. :)

Could you be satisfied with a "Full" aka "Double" standard mattress? those are 54x75. Then you have almost infinite options for material, thickness, firmness, quality and price.

Our first Class C had an overhead area something like 60x90-something and we crammed a "Queen" which is 60x80 up there. That meant we could no longer open the cockpit ceiling but that was fine with us. We got the feel we wanted in a mattress AND the use of standard fitted sheets. That alone was worth the effort.

I learned something when I looked the sizes up to post here for you. The 60x75 "RV Queen" aka "Short Queen" is width of a Queen but length of a Double. Never knew that, not that it makes buying sheets any easier.

We just replaced the OEM "RV Queen" in our current Class C. Bought a foam "Queen" and undid the covering on one end. Rolled it back and cut 5" off the end with Dexter the Chef's Knife. Sewed back by hand, overcast with carpet thread and made that end the Head, against the wall of the coach. Shout out to KristinU for the encouragement to buy a mattress and slice it down. Salesman told me people actually do that all the time. He'd sold an x-thousand-$ temperpedic to an RV owner who took it home and cut it off.

I don't like the idea of ordering a custom mattress or an RV mattress because we usually can't try it. Mattress store had them on display, we could try a couple choices side by side, discuss and agree. Really came out well.
  • We had to replace the mattress in our truck camper due to vandals breaking in through the overhead skylight - then rain before we discovered the situation.
There was a mattress manufacturer near us so we drove the TC to them, they took measurements and made recommendations on selection of foam, thickness, etc.

The cost was reasonable and they took the old one out, disposed of it and put the new one in place. Maybe this route would work for you.
  • I wanted a custom size "real mattress" not a piece of foam in a bag in the Roadtrek and ordered one from Louis at replacement-mattress.com, he was very helpful in selecting the rigth mattress.
