Calico Ghost Town

What's to do here. It seems I've heard there's an RV park there, but I can't find any info about it. I appreciate any info you can give me. Thanks
Brian

Not too much, just relax maybe hike, might get lucky and see a desert tortoise.
  • We stayed there a few weeks ago and were not impressed with the campground or the ghost town. The sites in the campground are close together and not very level.

The ghost town is mostly shops and isn't very authentic but you get in free if you're camping. There are addition charges if you want to ride the little train, pan for gold or go into the mystery shack or the mine mockup.

But a lot of other people liked it - RV Park Reviews - http://www.rvparkreviews.com/regions/california/yermo/calico-ghost-town-campground
  • It looked like a cool place when they featured it in Trailer Life. If you have an ORV you can leave right from the campground!

Looked like a place I would spend a couple days.
  • Calico Ghost Town is not really a full time destination. A couple of times a year they have special weekends where there's more to do, like Calico Days in October. The campground is just dirt and more dirt and you're really packed in. There's a little strip of cabins (beds only - about 5 of them). There is also some overflow parking in what they call the cemetery. We use to go every couple of years for Calico Days and dry camp in the cemetery. It was actually a lot of fun on those weekends. The big event is the mule race.
  • Ohv is really the thing. Hiking is ok but...
some will also shoot. Town is Knotts berry farm esque
  • Went there back in the early '60s and it was fun. But I decided to return a few years ago and was disappointed - there is a HUGE difference looking at it through a child's eyes vs. these adult eyes! We spent one night at the KOA and moved over to the Calico campground. The KOA was run-down and expensive while Calico was run-down and cheap, and staying there got us into the town for free.
  • Family loves this place! Have camped there during events and camped there in winter and been the only people there it seemed. Love the town, the hiking, the spaced out sites, and the people working there are great! Ghost stories and ghost walks are awesome! It is what you make of it I suppose. Calico is on our list just about every year for a few days!
