- GamooreExplorerTraveled this route twice in our motor home with no problems. Compared to the Alaska Highway through The Yukon Territories it is a super highway!
- J-RoosterExplorerI've taken that route several times in my coach with no problems! IMHO, fuel up in Redding, CA. before you head to the coast!
- moparmaga2ExplorerJust took this route about 1.5 months ago.
The road winds around, but I did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Seemed like any other road that goes through pretty scenery.
I have a 43 foot Motorhome pulling a Jeep.
I would give the road a 3/10 in difficulty. For reference, Million Dollar Highway in Colorado I would rate 7 out of 10.
Sea to Sky highway north of Vancouver is the only road so far I would rate at 10/10 for a 43 foot RV, and I have been on the vast majority of good ones in the Western US. - KampingKrisExplorerSigh. Second time driving the motorhome... was fine until the big twisty big climb outside of Redding... didn't downshift quick enough... didn't watch the "tailwag" enough on a sharp turn and the DH took over at the next wide spot. Can't say I liked the road much, but it's doable. Made me wish for the 5er - easier to drive (my DH disagrees of course...)
But there was lots of road work.. and don't think they are finished yet. This was in October. - TrixExplorerMy wife still trembles when 299 comes up in conversations, but that was our first trip in our Class A and she was not accustomed to riding the white line. I have learned to really ride the yellow line so the DW does not freak out. The curves on 299 are somewhat challenging, but a beautiful drive.
- diveman52ExplorerBeen there done that prefer not to do it again !!!!
- badbob1ExplorerOne of the most beautiful drives you can take. Road is great and no problems with
rv your size. Road work on Buckhorn mountain is wrapped up for the winter. Steelhead now running in the Trinity river.
Enjoy the drive
Badbob - chris3403ExplorerX2 on the beautiful scenery. Pulled my 35 foot 5th wheel on that route back in August.
- romoreExplorer III drove that road in an underpowered overloaded truck, 6-1/2 hours from Redding to Eureka. :S Beautiful scenery, you won't have a problem if you don't push.
- 2bzy2cExplorer IINothing like HWY 1. Not even close. Heck the drop offs are only about 50 feet. :D No problem.
On the road outside of Whiskeytown Lake they were doing some pretty serious road construction this summer. Hopefully by now they are done and the road is much wider in sections.
