California vacation

We'll be headed to California for a month in July - looking for places to visit & stay while touring the state. Will be traveling In a 42 ft motor home - if there are any highways we should avoid would appreciate your thoughts. Our plans for sure are to see Yosemite & the Redwoods - if there are any specific places to see around these two parks your suggestions are welcome. Thanks Good Sam friends!

FYI: Hwy1 is currently closed in both directions @ Big Sur and will likely remain that way for a year :(
  • "Our plans for sure are to see Yosemite & the Redwoods"

Avoid Big Basin Redwood SP, our first park and pretty much west of Yosemite, only because of your length...:( But driving U.S.101 north of San Francisco will put you in Humboldt with the Avenue of the Giants, Prairie Creek and Del Norte Redwood SPs.
  • CalTrans length info:

Note that it says "What is a 45-foot bus or motorhome? On this website, it refers to a bus or motorhome that has a length greater than 40', up to 45'." Huh??? Anyway, yours falls into that range.

Here's a link to CalTrans interactive map of restrictions:

  • We have been to California a number of times and have not seen anywhere near all of it. In July probably best to stay near the coast unless you like temps well into the 100's.
  • Sequoia & Kings Canyon Natl Parks are good to see. You may need to stay outside the park, I suggest Sequoia RV Ranch for a good base camp.
San Francisco stay outside the city and take the rapid transit system in (BART) for sight seeing. Walk across the Golden Gate bridge...Alcatraz
