With a lot of heart ache anything can be kept on the road and there are many more that were junked else where. The fact someone says they have a 20 or 30 year old MH that is fine is not a statistically significant fact."
Off topic I know, but I was in Cuba about 10 years ago taking a tour through the Museum of Natural History out of NYC. A regular citizen cannot go to Cuba directly, it has to be through an organization if coming from the USA. If you are caught with a Cuba stamp in your passport, I think the fine is $50,000 (trying to remember from 10 yrs. ago). Our passports were not stamped.
Anyway, Cuba certainly has a collection of old American cars. The newest American car that I saw was a '61 Impala, most were from the early to late 50's. They do have many new cars that seemed to be Asian (Nissan, Honda, etc.). Castro rode in a fleet of Mercedes sedans.... always three in a row so you wouldn't know which car he was in. Also, it was stated that he never stayed in the same house two nights in a row as he has had over 40 assassination attempts.
I asked some of the Cuban's how they could keep these old American cars running. Virtually all of them had replacement Russian parts. Basically, just the shell of the car was American. Very innovative people. When Russia fell in the early 90's, the Cuban's almost starved to death as most of their support came from Russia.
Cuba is a beautiful place that is crumbling. It's funny to go to an island that has no boats in the harbor. There were several yachts in the distance but not a single boat at shore. We toured a cigar factory where propaganda was spoken all day over the loud speakers. Most people make .50 to a $1 a day. Doctors make about $50-$60 a month.
They have a 99% literacy rate and everything is free, all schooling including college. They give you vouchers for clothing and food. It was very interesting and sad to see a communist country in person.
