For us, the miles aren't the issue, it is how much of the time you are in your site. If you leave in the afternoon to hike or go out to eat, etc. If you drive, camp, drive, camp, and aren't out of the site much, you won't have a problem in most cases. If you are up early to go on a long hike or driving tour that will get you back near dark, that is when you would be most likely to have an issue, both with site poaching or theft if you left something there.
