Maybe a function of the TV, but the newer digital TV's should just need a coax cable to the RV's connection. The tuner in the TV should take over from there. We have stayed at a couple of campgrounds with digital TV and all we had to do was hook the cable to the campers connection, ensure the amplifier was turned off and program the TV
depends on the cable system. the same law that
required the OTA broadcasters to migrate from analog to digital
permitted the cable companies to scramble their product resulting in the customer having to use a cable set-top box to descramble the signal. with analog or unscrambled digital cable all one need to is connect a piece of coax between the cable hookup and the TV or TV switch box, change the 'source' from antenna to cable, scan for channels and you're in business. the need to use a set-top descrambler complicates this process. you could connect the descrambler between the hookup and TV switch box. that should send the descrambled signal to all TVs connected to the switch but they would all be limited to watching the same channel. Comcast here in suburban Chicago made that change several years ago.

An older analog TV will need a box.
not for cable but it you will need a converter box for OTA TV.

Kind of defeats the purpose if you have to run a wire through the window.
yup. I'm considering running two pigtails from my TV switch box which would make it easier to insert a campground's cable box.
